SUBJECT: REPORT: ABKHAZ PRESSURING GEORGIAN STUDENTS TO
CHANGE CITIZENSHIP

On April 30, Georgian media reported that Abkhaz officials
are demanding that 70 ethnic Georgian students attending
Sukhumi University renounce their Georgian citizenship and
take Abkhaz citizenship or be expelled from the university.
The Abkhaz demand reportedly came after Georgian and Abkhaz
students demonstrated in front of the court building where
three Georgian students are being tried for illegally
crossing the Abkhaz-Georgian border on March 1. Atanas
Baltov, United Nations Observer Mission to Georgia (UNOMIG)
Senior Political Officer, said that UNOMIG has been unable to
confirm the report but that their human rights officer in
Sukhumi would investigate. UNOMIG was also unable to confirm
a separate Georgian media report alleging that Abkhaz
officials are threatening ethnic Georgians living in
Ochimchira with eviction from their homes unless they adopt
Abkhaz citizenship and pay a USD 5,000 fine.
